Should you ditch buying new and shop second-hand? In this article we are going to share 4 reasons why you should shop second-hand.
When it comes to buying outdoor equipment and gear unfortunately the go-to is usually purchasing new. Although it might take less effort to go to an outdoor shop and buy, new, exactly what you want it’s not always the must sustainable and earth friendly option. Not only does buying new cost you a lot more money but the cost of producing those new items and materials is also high.
1. Saves money/Creates accessibility:
I think it’s safe to say that most of us want to save money in any way we can. The cost of new outdoor equipment can be very high which makes getting into the outdoors inaccessible.
Things like backpacks, tents, clothing, sleeping bags, footwear, bikes, skis, snowboards, crash pads, climbing shoes, etc. are all great items to buy used.
Often you can find used outdoor gear for 50-70% off retail prices depending on the condition of the item.
2. Supports small/local business:
When you shop second-hand you are likely shopping at a local thrift store, consignment shop or vintage shop. When you shop at these places you help support the local economy. Most of these shops are mom-and-pop shops and really need your support to keep their businesses thriving. Not only that but most thrift stores are in some way tied to raising funds for non-profits.
Here are some local used gear businesses:
Mountain Equipment Recyclers– Colorado Springs, CO
Colorado Gear Lab– Woodland Park, CO
Feral– Denver. CO
Wilderness Exchange – Denver, CO
3. Our impact on nature matters:
When it comes to the outdoor industry especially, we should be putting the planet first in all the ways we can. When we shop second-hand, it reduces the amount of energy and natural resources that goes into production of new products. Buying secondhand goods means that the energy and natural resources that went into creating those goods have already been used. So, you’re not creating a demand for new items that require additional energy or deplete even more natural resources.
4. Find unique items:
This is the fun part of shopping second hand! You can find some unique items with a story to tell. The item could have been repaired, custom made, a patch was sewn on for the trail they hiked, etc. Why be like everyone else and have the same gear as your friend when you can get a sweet vintage stove that works just as well as the new ones?
All in all, this isn’t a diss on outdoor companies producing new equipment. In fact, a ton of outdoor companies are now offering used items that they bought back from their customers which we think is a huge step in the right direction. Some of those companies are Rei, Patagonia, Arc’teryx.
Buying used is becoming more popular and we hope to see that initiative growing more and more as time goes on.
